Robert P. Laborde, MD

dr robertRobert P. Laborde, MD is a board certified and fellowship trained vitreo-retinal specialist. An ophthalmologist, who specializes in eye surgery, laser surgery, and diseases of the retina, Dr. Laborde has practiced ophthalmology for 30 years in western North Carolina. He treats Diabetic Eye Disease, Retinal Detachment, and Age-related Macular Degeneration as well as other diseases of the eye.

Dr. Laborde attended LSU Medical School in New Orleans, graduating in 1986. He completed his three-year residency with both LSU and Tulane University School of Medicine. His retina fellowship was spent with Dr. Steve Charles, world-renowned pioneer of vitreo-retinal surgery in Memphis, TN at the Charles Retina Institute and University of Tennessee School of Medicine. Dr. Laborde is a board certified fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He has served at both area hospitals and has full surgical privileges at both Pardee/UNC Health Care  and Advent Health/Park Ridge Hospitals

After 15 years in a group practice, Dr. Laborde launched Laborde Eye Group,  his ophthalmology practice in Hendersonville, Asheville, Spruce Pine, Burnsville, and Columbus/Tryon. Dr. Laborde established a permanent home for Laborde Eye Group at 630 5th Avenue West, Hendersonville, NC.
He and his wife Susan raised three daughters in Hendersonville, all three graduates of Hendersonville High School and UNC-Chapel Hill.

Stephen J. Capps, MD, MPH

dr stephenA North Carolina native, born at Camp LeJeune, Dr. Capps received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Arizona. After completing a surgical internship at USC School of Medicine, he worked as an ER physician and served as an Emergency Department director in Juneau, Alaska.            Dr. Capps then entered and completed a prestigious four-year residency at LSU Eye Center in New Orleans, LA. Before joining Laborde Eye Group, he was in  private practice in Covington, LA, focusing on sutureless cataract surgery, eye trauma,  glaucoma and anterior segment eye disease.

Steve and his wife Karen have raised five  children — three of whom graduated Hendersonville High School.  He is an avid fisherman and enjoys traveling with his family. Steve is a boat builder and the proud creator of “Cappseyz,” an 18-foot Louisiana skiff that has won first place in historic boat reproduction contests.

Like thousands of families in the New Orleans area and along the Gulf Coast, Dr. Capps and his family were displaced by Katrina after their home was damaged. After eight years here in Western North Carolina, he is glad to call Hendersonville home.
